With the coming of this month, many festivals are to be held to entertain us. YOSAKOI SORAN Festival is starting at the beginning of this month. In the suburbs, lots of fruits are at their best, strawberries, cherries or our famous muskmelons are shipped to the market as the symbol of the rich harvest of our land.

We are starting world-famous Pacific Music Festival collecting promising young musicians from all over the world by audition under the supervision of the great conductors. On the bank of Toyohira River running through the city-center, big-scale Fire Work Display is entertaining people, often dressed in pretty Yukata ,cotton kimonos for summer. One of the delicacies of summer, sea urchin is at its best.

The season is quickly shifting from summer to fall. In Toyohira River, in the middle of the city, we see salmon coming back from the ocean after the long voyage, to lay eggs. From the beginning of this month, big fair is held related to ‘Food’ in Odori Park, collecting various kinds of good food from all over Hokkaido, telling us it’s time for us to enjoy the blessing of Nature, the best quality of food we’re proud of in Hokkaido.

Trees are changing their tints, into pretty red or yellow. Autumnal leaves viewing our seasonal event is a great entertainment now, in the mountains from the beginning of this month, around our houses up to the middle. Most of the broadleaf trees are changing the colors into vivid tints, especially the maple trees, gingko trees are great entertainers, with their colors changing day by day against the pale blue sky. We also find the apples are growing red. Almost every year we have the first snow at the end of this month.

Days are getting shorter, with the sharp declining of temperature. We come to find snow falling from time to time under the blue-grey sky. In the latter half of this month, big attraction, “ Sapporo White Illumination “ starts, when thousands of lights in fantastic, artistic colors and forms glow after dark, amusing us by making the world of fantasy. Taking advantage of longer night, this is the month for reading, enjoying art exhibitions. Many concerts are held in Sapporo Concert Hall ‘Kitara’. “Munich Christmas Market” is close at hand.

Season in the snow , we’re in the middle of white world. Ave. snow-fall days are about 25, almost every day. In Sapporo it’s natural for us to have ‘ White Christmas‘. People become busier to have parties at home, with their friends or in the companies around Christmas day. When the year-end is approaching, we become much busier to prepare for the coming of the new year, buying some particular ornaments, or getting ready for traditional cuisine, cleaning the houses. Children have nearly 3 weeks winter-vacation.
